Botox is the name for a drug made from botulinum toxin type A. Botulinum toxin is the bacteria responsible for a type of food poisoning called botulism. However, when botox injections are administered in very small doses, it blocks the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which helps transmit nerve impulses. Botox paralyzes the affected muscle, which relieves painful muscle spasms and tremors and helps control an embarrassing condition called hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Botox injections are probably best known for its use as an antiaging treatment because it smoothes wrinkles in the face and neck area.

Botox injections are used to treat patients with diseases that cause muscle spasms and tremors, such as multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy; neurological conditions such as muscle spasms of the neck and shoulders (cervical dystonia), muscle spasms of the eyelid (blepharospasm), and muscle spasms of the face (hemifacial spasm); and hyperhidrosis. It has also been found effective in treating migraine headaches and leg stiffness/weakness (spasticity) in stroke patients.

Botox injections are injected through a hypodermic needle into the affected area. For example, in patients with hyperhidrosis, Botox is injected into the area where excessive sweating is a problem, such as the hands or underarms. For conditions that cause muscle spasms or tremors, the drug is injected into the affected muscles. In the treatment of migraines, Botox injections are injected into the forehead area. Botox is not a permanent treatment. Patients require many small injections during one session. Results may last anywhere from weeks to months before additional injections are needed

Patients who are receiving Botox injections to treat muscle spasms and tremors usually require physical or occupational therapy to maintain muscle mobility and strength. Some botox injection patients may experience some temporary weakness and discomfort in the treated area. Others may develop a resistance to botulinum toxin type A, but may respond to the type B form.

You will want to know that your surgeon is experienced and qualified to perform the botox injections. Many surgeons have taken special training and passed exams given by a national board of surgeons. Ask if your surgeon is "board certified" in surgery. Some botox injection surgeons also have the letters F.A.C.S. after their name. This means they are Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and have passed another review by surgeons of their surgical practices.

Most of us have some criteria for making important decisions in life. But suppose that your botox injection doctor recommends that you consider having an operation. A good indication of a botox injection surgeons competence is certification by a surgical board that is approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). In order for a physician to become board certified in botox injections, he or she must complete the designated years of residency training in that specialty, and then demonstrate his or her knowledge by successfully completing a rigorous examination. When you choose a surgeon who is certified by an ABMS-approved board, you select a physician whose specialty is in surgery.
