A brow lift is the surgical removal of excess fat and skin, as well as a tightening of the muscles in the forehead area. It can correct sagging brows or deep furrows between the eyes. A brow lift is often done in conjunction with a facelift, in order to create a smoother facial appearance overall. There are two types of surgical techniques available for a brow lift, including the classic brow lift and the endoscopic brow lift:

In the classic brow lift, the surgeon will make an incision that is similar to a headphone-like pattern. This incision is called a coronal incision and starts at about ear level and continues across the top of the forehead to the other ear. The brow lift surgeon then carefully lifts the skin of the forehead removing any excess tissue and fat and, if necessary, realigns the muscles. During the brow lift procedure, the eyebrows may also be repositioned at a higher level, and any excess skin is trimmed.

The difference between the endoscopic brow lift and the classic brow lift is the size of the incision. With the endoscopic brow lift, the surgeon makes three to five short scalp incisions that are each less than an inch long. An endoscope is then inserted through one of the incisions allowing the surgeon to see the muscles and tissues underneath. In a different incision, the brow lift surgeon inserts another instrument that lifts the forehead skin. Excess tissue and fat are then removed and, if necessary, muscles are realigned. Like the classic brow lift, the eyebrows may also be repositioned at a higher level. The recovery period and scarring is minimal, in comparison to the classic brow lift.

A brow lift can help people of any age who have developed furrows or frown lines due to stress, muscle activity, or inherited conditions, such as a low, heavy brow or furrowed lines above the nose. However, it is most commonly performed on people ages 40 to 60, to minimize the visible effects of aging. Brow lift surgery is often performed in conjunction with a facelift or eyelid lift surgery.

You will want to know that your surgeon is experienced and qualified to perform the brow lifts. Many surgeons have taken special training and passed exams given by a national board of surgeons. Ask if your surgeon is "board certified" in surgery. Some brow lift surgeons also have the letters F.A.C.S. after their name. This means they are Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and have passed another review by surgeons of their surgical practices.

Most of us have some criteria for making important decisions in life. But suppose that your brow lift doctor recommends that you consider having an operation. How do you go about finding a qualified surgeon? If you or someone you know is considering elective surgery, you should be aware that there are some ways to objectively evaluate your surgeon. The American College of Surgeons—the largest international organization of surgeons in the world—recommends that you look for the following qualifications:

A good indication of a brow lift surgeons competence is certification by a surgical board that is approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). In order for a physician to become board certified in brow lifts, he or she must complete the designated years of residency training in that specialty, and then demonstrate his or her knowledge by successfully completing a rigorous examination. When you choose a surgeon who is certified by an ABMS-approved board, you select a physician whose specialty is in surgery.

What will happen if I don't have this operation?
Where can I get a second opinion?

How much will the operation cost?
