Cosmetic chin augmentation surgery to change the shape of the chin, cheek, or jaw may be performed. This procedure is typically done to enhance certain facial features, or to bring a certain aspect of the face into proportion with the rest of the face.

When only a modest degree of chin augmentation is required to provide contour, the surgeon may use a prosthetic chin implant (artificial -- made of silicone, teflon, or dacron), or may use bone only. The chin augmentation incision is made either inside the mouth or externally under the chin. A pocket is created in front of the chin bone and under the muscles, and an appropriately sized prosthesis or chin implant is inserted. The chin augmentation incision is closed and a pressure dressing is applied. The resulting external scar is barely visible.

Movement or displacement of the implant, bruising (ecchymosis), and swelling of the chin are the most common chin augmentation complications. Infection and blood clots are rare postoperative problems. Nicotine from smoking can delay healing.

You will want to know that your surgeon is experienced and qualified to perform the chin augmentations. Many surgeons have taken special training and passed exams given by a national board of surgeons. Ask if your surgeon is "board certified" in surgery. Some chin augmentation surgeons also have the letters F.A.C.S. after their name. This means they are Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and have passed another review by surgeons of their surgical practices.

Most of us have some criteria for making important decisions in life. But suppose that your chin augmentation doctor recommends that you consider having an operation. The American College of Surgeons—the largest international organization of surgeons in the world—recommends that you look for the following qualifications:

A good indication of a chin augmentation surgeons competence is certification by a surgical board that is approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). In order for a physician to become board certified in chin augmentations, he or she must complete the designated years of residency training in that specialty, and then demonstrate his or her knowledge by successfully completing a rigorous examination. When you choose a surgeon who is certified by an ABMS-approved board, you select a physician whose specialty is in surgery.
