Sagging or drooping eyelids occur naturally with increasing age. However, some people are born with it or develop diseases that cause eyelid drooping. Most blepharoplasties are done to improve appearance, but some people have excessive eyelid drooping that actually interferes with vision. For these people eyelid lifts are required to improve eyesight. Eyelid lift is usually optional (elective) cosmetic surgery. It is usually done while the patient is awake or sleepy (sedated) but under local anesthesia. The eyelid lift incisions are made in the natural creases or folds of the eyelids. Loose skin and extra fat tissue is removed. The eyelid muscles are tightened and the incision is stitched closed. Eyelid lift surgery rarely requires hospitalization. The surgery is done in a surgeon's office or as outpatient surgery in a hospital or surgical center.

What is eyelid surgery?
The medical term for eyelid lifts is blepharoplasty. This procedure can remove puffiness or bags under the eyes. It can also correct droopy eyelids. In eyelid lift surgery, the physician surgically removes excess fat, muscle, and skin from both the upper and lower eyelids to redefine the shape of the eye.

Possible complications associated with eyelid lifts:
• temporary vision problems - Double or blurred vision may occur after undergoing eyelid surgery. This typically lasts for just a few days following the surgery.
eye closure problems. Some patients may have difficulty closing their eyes when they sleep; in rare cases this condition may be permanent.
• swelling or asymmetry changes - Temporary swelling and a slight imbalance of one eye in relation to the other may occur during the healing or scarring process.
• acne - After the stitches are removed, tiny whiteheads may appear. The surgeon can remove the whiteheads with a very fine needle.

Who are candidates for eyelid surgery?
Candidates for eyelid surgery are men and women who meet the following criteria:
• physically healthy
• psychologically stable
• realistic in their expectations
• age 35 or older

You will want to know that your surgeon is experienced and qualified to perform the eyelid lifts. Many surgeons have taken special training and passed exams given by a national board of surgeons. Ask if your surgeon is "board certified" in surgery. Some eyelid lift surgeons also have the letters F.A.C.S. after their name. This means they are Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and have passed another review by surgeons of their surgical practices.

Most of us have some criteria for making important decisions in life. But suppose that your eyelid lift doctor recommends that you consider having an operation. A good indication of a eyelid lift surgeons competence is certification by a surgical board that is approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). In order for a physician to become board certified in eyelid lifts, he or she must complete the designated years of residency training in that specialty, and then demonstrate his or her knowledge by successfully completing a rigorous examination. When you choose a surgeon who is certified by an ABMS-approved board, you select a physician whose specialty is in surgery.
